Wildcats Split DH Sunday at Freed-Hardeman

The Culver-Stockton baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon to end the weekend with a 1-3 record in its four-game series with Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn.

The Wildcats plated six runs in the first inning of the opener Sunday en route to a 12-5 decision in game one. In the nightcap, the Lions scored two runs in the fifth inning to snap a 4-4 tie, and then added an insurance run in the seventh inning for a 7-4 victory over the Wildcats.

In game one, Jeremiah Morris started the six-run uprising in the opening inning with a run-scoring single. Cooper Gillette was hit by pitch with bases loaded to drive in the second run before Harry Oden drove in two runs with a two-run single. Wyatt Wright ended the scoring with a two-run home run.

C-SC added two more runs in the third inning on a two-run homer by Tim Meyer, scoring Gillette who reached after being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.

Freed-Hardeman cut the lead to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth; however, the Wildcats put the game away with a four-run sixth inning.

The first run scored as the result of a throwing error, and then Kannon Kirk drilled a three run home run to account for the Wildcat scoring.

C-SC collected eight hits and were issued six walks in the game. Morris and Brandon Diaz Valentin recorded two hits each to lead the offense. Valentin, Kirk, Gillette, and Wright all scored two runs each.

Brayden Prott pitched the first five innings to earn the victory on the mound. Prott gave up six hits and all five runs (3 earned) while walking one and striking out four. Jack Cartwright and Ryan Jung each pitched a scoreless inning allowing one walk each.

In game two, the Wildcats took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a RBI double by Valentin and a two-run homer from Kirk.

The Lions regained the lead at 4-3 with a three-run frame in the bottom of the third, but the Wildcats answered with a run in the fourth on a RBI groundout by Ethan Weber to tie the game at four apiece.

Kirk was the only Wildcat to register a multiple hit game, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

C-SC and Freed-Hardeman are scheduled to play again next Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Midwest Clash at USA Stadium in Milligan, Tenn. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. The Wildcats are also set to play Northwestern (Ohio) next Saturday at 4 p.m.
