Baseball Drops Pair of Extra Inning Games
The Culver-Stockton baseball team began a weekend series at Olivet NazareneUniversity with a pair of extra inning losses at the Bradley Sports Complex in Bradley, Ill., Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats dropped a 7-6 decision in 10 innings in the opening game, and then suffered a 12-11 setback in 12 innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Wildcats led 6-3 after five innings only to with as the Tigers plated single runs in the sixth, seventh, ninth and 10th innings to pull out the victory.
C-SC belted out 11 hits in the curtain raiser, including two doubles from Kannon Kirk and a home run by Cooper Gillette. Gillette finished with three hits overall and two runs batted in, while Kirk had two hits and three RBI.
In the nightcap, C-SC fell behind 5-0 after two innings only to plate three in the third to get back to within 5-3. After a ONU scored two times in the bottom of the third to go up 7-3, the Wildcats added three more runs to pull within 7-6 after four innings.
C-SC outscored the Tigers 2-1 over the next two innings to tie the game 8-8 after six innings. The pitching finally shut the offense down for both teams over the next four innings before the Wildcats plated three runs in the 11th to take an 11-8 lead.
However, the Tigers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and then scratched across a run in the 12th frame to earn the sweep.
Harry Oden went 3-for-6 with four runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning. General Schofield was 4-for-6 with a home run while Brandon Diaz Valentin, Jeremiah Morris and Jack Linenfelsor all had two hits each. C-SC banged out 16 hits in the game.
The Wildcats and Tigers are scheduled to conclude their three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 28, with a nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
