Wildcat Nine Splits Twinbill at Baker
The Culver-Stockton College baseball team ended its non-conference slate with a split of doubleheader at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., Sunday afternoon.
Baker registered a 10-run inning en route to a 15-5 victory in the first game before the Wildcats shut down the Baker offense in game two to claim a 1-0 decision.
In the game two victory, Carter Jones pitched a four-hit shutout to help the Wildcats salvage the final game of the four-game road trip. Jones, who improved to 1-1 on the season, walked one and struck out five for his first complete game of the season.
Jones got the only run he needed in the fifth inning when Ethan Weber led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a one out single by Brandon Diaz Valentin.
The next batter, Jeremiah Morris, hit a groundball to third who stepped on third to force Weber. However, his throw to first to try and completed the double play was wild, allowing Valentin to toe to third before being sent home when the throw from the first baseman got by the catcher to score the game's only run.
General Schofield collected two of the Wildcats' four hits in the game.
In the opener, Baker led 4-0 heading to the third inning when they broke out with a 10-run outburst to increase its lead to 14-0. The hosts scored 10 times on six hits and five walks.
C-SC scored two runs in the sixth inning when Weber doubled home one run and Dallas Slayton scored on a wild pitch.
After Baker plated a run in the bottom of the inning, C-SC scored three more times in the seventh inning. Brant Sawyers drove in one run with an infield single, Slayton brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly, and Jack Linenfelser scored on a dropped third strike when Weber struck out.
C-SC collected seven hits overall with seven different players recording one hit each.
The Wildcats (5-11) are scheduled to begin Heart of America Athletic Conference play this Saturday, March 14, at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m.
