Wildcats Swept in Opening Heart Series
The Culver-Stockton College baseball team was swept by Grand View in a four-game series to start the Heart of America Athletic Conference campaign over the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.
After dropping both games Friday in walk-off fashion, the Wildcats were limited to five hits in a 2-0 first-game loss in the opening game Saturday. In game two, C-SC rallied from a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the seventh only to watch as the Vikings recorded their third walk-off of the weekend by scoring a run in the eight inning to capture a 6-5 victory.
In the opener, Brayden Prott allowed just one earned run in hurling six strong innings for the Wildcats. Prott scattered six hits over those innings, striking out four and not walking a batter. The Vikings score a run in the third inning and an unearned run in the fourth.
Kannon Kirk led the offense with two of the five hits for the Wildcats, who didn't have an extra base hit in the game.
In the nightcap, C-SC trailed 5-2 in the seventh when they rallied for three runs in the inning to force a tie. Brandon Diaz Valentin drove in the first run with a groundout and Jeremiah Morris and Harry Oden followed with run-scoring singles.
Grand View put a runner on base in the seventh but failed to score. In the eighth, the Vikings led off the inning with a game-winning home run.
Valentn and Jack Linenfelser had two hits each to lead the Wildcat nine-hit attack. Wyatt Wright and Cooper Kiel recorded doubles in the game.
C-SC is scheduled to play its home opener next Saturday, March 21, against Mount Mercy University at Nichols Field. The first game of the scheduled twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
