Not Enough Big Plays for Wildcat Football in Opening Loss to Mount Marty
A couple of long pass completions between Drake Day and Kyle Dixon wasn't enough to propel the Culver-Stockton College football team to a season-opening victory over Mount Marty University Saturday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The visitors from Yankton, S.D., possessed the ball for over 40 minutes and ran 32 more offensive plays in registering a 42-14 victory over the Wildcats.
The Lancers scored on their first two possessions and led 13-0 when the first quarter ended with the Wildcats facing a second and nine at their own five yard line.
The big play between Day and Dixon came on the first play of the second quarter when Day threw a quick pass to the flat and Dixon raced 62 yards to the Mount Marty 33-yard line. On the very next play, Day and Dixon hooked up again for a 33-yard touchdown pass to get the Wildcats on the scoreboard.
Trailing 13-7 at the half, C-SC received the second half kickoff but was forced to punt the bal back the Lancers.
Mount Marty took advantage by driving 57 yards on eight plays to extend its lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter after a successful two-point conversion.
Things got worse for the Wildcats on the next possession when Day was picked off and the Lancers returned it 38 yards for a touchdown to make it a 21-point deficit at 28-7.
However, Dixon and Day needed just one play to get the Wildcats within two touchdowns.
Day found Dixon streaking down the right sideline for a 75-yard scoring strike. Ethan Boulanger's extra point made it 28-14 with 7:13 to play in the third quarter.
The Lancers seemed unfazed by the big strike ability by the Wildcats, driving the ball to the C-SC 35-yard line on the ensuing possession.
But the Wildcat defense stepped up as Kaden Thomas forced a fumble and Robert Jones recovered it for the home team to put the C-SC back in business.
But the Wildcats could only move the ball 32 yards before having to punt the ball back to the Lancers and the visitors were able to put together an 11-play, 80-yard drive to score a touchdown to make in a 21-point game at 35-14.
Dixon finished the night with five receptions for 189 yards and two scores. He averaged 37.6 yards per reception. Day ended his first game as a Wildcat with 11 completions on 22 attempts for 252 yards.
Mount Marty rushed for 264 yards and totaled 436 yards overall. The Lancers ran 76 plays to the Wildcats' 44 and possessed the ball for 42:20 of the 60 minutes played. C-SC was limited to 287 total yards and had just 35 yards rushing.
The Wildcats (0-1) are scheduled to host nationally-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene University in a Heart of America Athletic Conference cross-over game next Saturday, Sept. 7, at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
