Morton's Field Goal on Final Play Wins it for Wildcats
It was a tale of two halves for the Culver-Stockton football team in its road game at William Woods University Saturday night in Fulton, Mo.
The Wildcats dominated the first half and led 27-7 after 30 minutes of action. However, the offense went dormant for much of the second half and that allowed the Owls to roar back to take a 36-35 lead with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter.
The C-SC offense found itself in the final two minutes and Matt Morton, a kicker who was just added to the roster this week, kicked a 30-yard field on the final play of the game to lift the Wildcats to a 38-36 victory.
The Owls had rallied and taken a one-point lead when the Wildcats took over on their own 25-yard line.
Two Liam Thornton passes gained 22 yards and a five yard scramble by Thornton added five more to put the Wildcats at the WWU 48 yard line.
Thornton then found Jaqorian Wiggles for a 24-yard pass play; however, a holding penalty on the Wildcats moved the ball back to the C-SC 42.
A 12-yard pass to Kyle Dixon brought up fourth down and the Wildcats converted when Thornton found Dixon for another nine yards for a first down.
A pass interference call aided the Wildcats on the next play and put the ball at the Owl 22-yard line with 12 seconds left.
Two incomplete passes later the Wildcats were still at the 22-yard line but now only two seconds remained. Instead of going for a field goal, the Wildcats ran a play and WWU was called for holding as time expired.
Given a free 10 yards and an untimed down, C-SC sent Morton out and he hit a line drive through the uprights to give the Wildcats the victory.
In the opening half, Wiggles caught two touchdown passes covering 28 and 70 in length. Wiggles finished the game with four catches for 112 yards, averaging 28 yards per reception.
Running back Jermonte Alexander had a huge receiving day, catching two touchdown passes covering a total of 66 yards. Alexander had a 15-yard touchdown reception in the first half, and a 51-yard catch and run to give C-SC a 35-28 lead in the fourth quarter, its only touchdown of the second half.
Dixon also had a touchdown reception for the Wildcats, a 33-yard strike in the first half, and finished with a team-best eight receptions for 83 yards.
Thornton ended the night with a four touchdown passes on 18 of 35 accuracy. Thornton threw for 268 yards overall.
The Wildcats totaled 351 yards of total offense with 338 of those yards coming through the air. C-SC was limited to 13 yards rushing but did not commit a turnover.
Meanwhile, the Wildcat defense forced five Owl turnovers, three fumbles and two interceptions. Jaden Williams and Mason Leu recorded interceptions while Elijah Wiggins and Ryne Martin recovered fumbles.
C-SC (2-1) is scheduled to play the next two weeks at home beginning next Saturday, Sept. 20, against Missouri Valley College. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
