Football Scores 28 Unanswered Points in Road Victory at Graceland
The Culver-Stockton football team spotted Graceland University a 14-0 lead before scoring 28 consecutive points in a 28-21 Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division victory Saturday afternoon at Huntsman Field in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Yellowjackets posted a touchdown in the each of the first two quarters to jump out to a two touchdown lead. However, the Wildcats found the end zone with 15 seconds left in the first half when Jaqorian Wiggles caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Liam Thornton to cut the deficit in half just before halftime.
After the teams traded punts to start the second half, C-SC tied the game on its second possession when Thornton hit Jason Davenport with a 20-yard touchdown pass. Bradyn Ritchie's extra point tied the game at 14 with 10:11 remaining in the quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the Wildcat defense got in the act as defensive end Elijah Wiggins recorded a sack, forcing a fumble in the process. Joseph Cook recovered the fumble and returned it to the Graceland 35.
On the first play after the fumble recovery, Thorton threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, this time to Kyle Dixon, for a 21-14 lead.
The C-SC defense forced a three-and-out on the Yellowjackets' next possession and took over at their own 37-yard line.
The Wildcat offense continued to hum along, marching 63 yards on six plays before Tajh Washington finished it off with a two-yard run and a 28-14 lead with 5:56 to play in the third quarter.
Graceland didn't really threaten the rest of the way, scoring with 1:25 left in the game to make things interesting. However, the Wildcats recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock for their second road victory of the year.
Thornton finished the day with 20 completions on 41 attempts for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Dixon and Wiggles registered six receptions each with Dixon gaining 82 yards and Wiggles 65 yards.
C-SC rushed for 200 yards in the game, the third straight week the Wildcats have eclipsed the 100-yard mark in rushing. Shamon Coleman led the ground attack with a career-high 121 yards on 12 carries, averaging 10.1 yard per carry.
The Wildcat defense forced four turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions, in the game. Azaan Tabari and Maddox Fraley recorded the interceptions while Cook and Sonny Jenkins recovered fumbles.
The Wildcats, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the North Division, will enjoy the victory with a bye next week. C-SC returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a road game at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
