Short-handed Wildcats Fall to Peru State at Home
An injury-riddled Culver-Stockton College men's basketball team succumbed to Peru State College 71-50 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference game at Charles Field House Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats, who were playing without three players, Ryan Stevenson, Tai Walters-Whitaker, and Nick Spannaus, who combined are averaging 30.2 points per game, hung close with the Bobcats for the first 17 minutes in the first half before a late spurt saw the visitors take 28-20 halftime lead.
C-SC was still within striking distance, trailing 31-26, with 16 minutes left in the game, when Peru State went on a 10-0 run total a 41—26 lead over the next three minutes. The Wildcats would not get closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
The Wildcats shot less than 30 percent from the field for the second straight game, finishing Saturday at 27.6 percent after making just 16 of their 58 attempts. Defensively, C-SC limited the Bobcats 43.5 percent shooting.
Connor Davis was the only Wildcat player to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with a game-high 24 points. David was 7-for-20 from the field, including 3-for-9 from the 3-point arc, and a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. As a team, C-SC finished 12-for-14 from the free throw line.
Martez Rhodes finished the day with seven points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Roee Dinnar had eight points and seven caroms.
The Wildcats are slated to return to action next Saturday, Jan. 18, at nationally-ranked Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
