Wildcats Withstand HSSU Comeback, Earn Road Victory

The Culver-Stockton men's basketball team withstood a furious comeback by Harris-Stowe State University to claim a 93-85 road victory at the Emerson Performance Center in St. Louis, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats built a 51-32 halftime lead on the strength of a strong shooting effort that saw C-SC shoot 67 percent overall, including 46 percent from outside the 3-point stripe. The Wildcats were 20-for-30 from t he field overall and 6-for-13 from long distance.

C-SC extended its lead to as much as 25 points early in the second half when Damar Jenkins made a 3-pointer to make the lead 68-43 with 14:21 to play in the game.

However, the Hornets chipped away at the deficit and got as close as a point at 84-83 with 1:46 left in the game.

That is when Travis Green III took over.

Green scored five straight points, including two layups in a span of 11 seconds, to push the lead to 89-83 with 28 seconds remaining. 

Ramzi Salem then drained four straight free throws in the final 15 seconds to preserve the victory and even C-SC's record at 2-2.

Jenkins recorded a team-high 27 points, scoring 20 of those 27 in the first half as the Wildcats built its halftime advantage. Jenkins finished nine of 16 from the field, including 6-for-12 from the 3-point line.

Salem ended the night with 16 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, while Green finished with 15 points. Damont Hanton was the fourth C-SC in double figures with 14 points. 

Green, along with Alex Jackson IV, grabbed seven rebounds to lead the visitors, and Salem dished out five assists.

The Wildcats turned the ball over 18 times in the game and Harris-Stowe took advantage by scoring 27 points off this miscues. However, the Wildcats offset that scoring edge by outscoring the Hornets 20-6 from the free throw line.

C-SC is scheduled to return to action this Wednesday, Nov. 12, when the Wildcats host Mission University at Charles Field House. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
