'Cats Fail To Convert Two Last Second 3-Point Attempts, Fall to WWU at Home
The Culver-Stockton men's basketball team missed two game-tying 3-point shots in the final six seconds as William Woods University escaped with a 77-74 victory Monday night at Charles Field House.
The Wildcats gained possession and took a time out after a missed shot by the Owls' Clay Butler with 19 seconds remaining.
C-SC worked the ball Damar Jenkins who had an open shot from the left corner. The shot missed by the Wildcats' but Alex Jackson grabbed the offensive rebound and flipped to Kamren Wires who in turn found Jenkins in the corner for another attempt. The shot rattled in and out as time expired.
C-SC led 40-37 at halftime after shooting 47 percent from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
William Woods started the second half quickly and led 46-45 at the first media timeout of the second half. By they time the game reached the second media timeout, the Owls had built a 63-51 lead with a 17-6 run over a five minute span.
The Owls still led by eight points at 77-69 after a basket with three minutes left in regulation, however, the Wildcats didn't allow another scored by the visitors and cut the lead to the final margin on layups by Wires and Jenkins and one of two free throws by Wires with 90 seconds left.
After WWU missed a free throw with 1:07 to play, C-SC had a chance to cut the deficit to one but Ramz Salem missed a contested drive to the basket with 52 seconds remaining.
The Owls called time out and set up a play to put the game of reach, but it missed and the Wildcats grabbed the rebound setting up the flurry in t he final seconds by Jenkins.
Jenkins finished the game with a game high 26 points on 10 of 20 shooting from the field, including 6-for-14 from the 3-point stripe. Travis Green III was the only other Wildcat in double figures, finishing with 19 markers.
Jenkins and Green each recorded four assists each to lead the Wildcats, while Amir Pleura corralled nine rebounds and Alex Jackson IV gathered eight caroms. C-SC out rebounded the guests 38-31 overall.
C-SC will have a quick turnaround when they play at Mount Mercy University this Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
