Mallett Records 3344 Points on First Day of Decathlon, Sits 10th Overall
Culver-Stockton College junior Drew Mallett posted 3,344 total points on the first day of the decathlon at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Indiana University in Marin, Ind.
Mallett, who set a school record with 6.391 points in winning the decathlon at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships earlier this month, is just 23 points out of ninth place and 54 points out of eighth place.
The talented junior from LaGrange, Mo., got off to a fast start Wednesday in the 100-meter dash, registering a 10.98 second time to finish fourth in the event and record 865 points. It was only the second time in his career he broke 11 seconds in the 100.
Mallett struggled in the three field events that followed the 100, placing in the bottom tier of the 16-competitor field in the long jump, shot put and high jump.
However, Mallett rebounded in the final event of the day, the 400-meter run, placing fifth overall and garnering 724 points.
Mallett will begin day two with the 110-meter hurdles before competing in the discus, pole vault and javelin before ending the event with the 1,500-meter run. The 110 hurdles is stated to begin at 9 a.m. CDT.
