Ruiz Pitches Wildcats to First Victory of the Season

The Culver-Stockton College softball team captured its first victory of the season with a 4-1 victory over Saint Ambrose University in its fourth game of the Ambrose Dome Tournament Sunday in Davenport, Iowa. The Wildcats, who lost two games Saturday, opened the day with a 2-0 loss to Aquinas (Mich.).

Against Saint Ambrose, Penny Ruiz scattered eight hits and struck out seven to earn the victory over the Bees, a team that she lost to on Saturday. Ruiz walked one and allowed just a second inning run to improve to 1-3 on the season.

Offensively, the Wildcats, who had combined for seven hits in the first three games of the weekend tournament, collected nine hits against the Bees. Kataleena Hunt garnered two hits and scored two runs, while Cierra Bush totaled two hits and recorded a run batted in.

In the earlier game against Aquinas, the Wildcats managed just two hits, a double by Hunter Huddle in the sixth inning, and a double by Tiffany Lepic in the seventh inning.

Sophie Stuart was the hard-luck loser in the circle, scattering six hits and just two runs in six innings of work. Stuart struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The Wildcats (1-9) are scheduled to play at Hannibal-LaGrange University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Hannibal, Mo. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the Veterans Sports Complex.
