Wildcats Wastes Two Stellar Pitching Performances in DH Loss to Baker

The Culver-Stockton softball team couldn't have gotten two better pitched games in their doubleheader loss to Baker University Saturday afternoon at Himsl Field.

In the opener, Penny Ruiz allowed three runs, all in the sixth inning, and scattered seven hits over six innings in a 3-0 loss to the other Wildcats of the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Ruiz walked one and struck out two. Ellie Leigh pitched the seventh inning allowing no runs on one hit.

In game two. Kaylee Yost matched Ruiz's effort by only allowing single runs in the first and second inning of a 2-1 loss. Yost held Baker to three hits in the game while walking three and striking out two.

In the opener, the Wildcat offense was silenced by Baker starter Kira Baker, who hurled a two hit shutout. She struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

The Wildcats finally broke through in the third inning of game two and it started with a leadoff double from Katareena Hunt. She advanced to third on a single by Payton Todd and scored on another single by Hunter Huddle.

C-SC had a chance to add more in the inning; however, Todd was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball back to the pitcher, and Lacey Stamper grounded out on a hard-hit ball to the second baseman.

The Wildcats put the tying run on in the seventh inning when Huddle walked with two outs. But, Baker, who relieved starter Breana Barchak in the seventh inning, struck out Paige Kurfman to end the game.

C-SC is scheduled to play another conference doubleheader at home on Tuesday, April 1, against William Penn University. The first pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m. at Himsl Field.
