Lepic's Walk Off Single Gives Wildcats First Heart Victory
The Culver-Stockton College softball team picked up its first conference victory of the season with a walk off victory in the first game of a doubleheader with William Penn (Iowa) Tuesday afternoon at Himsl Field.
The Wildcats fell behind 3-0 to the Statesmen before plating two runs fifth inning and rallying for two more in the seventh to walk off with a 4-3 victory. William Penn won the second game 8-0.
Trailing 3-2 in the opener, Myah Briese started the seventh inning uprising with a leadoff walk. Katareena Hunt, trying to sacrifice, reached on a bunt single instead to put runners at first and second.
Payton Todd followed with a ground out to third to move both runners up a base to second and third. Hunter Huddle followed with a squeeze bunt to score pinch runner Courtney Zane from third to tie the game.
With Hunt at third and pinch runner Karli Dant at first, Statesmen pitcher Chelsey Huff uncorked a wild pitch. Hunt tried to score but was cut down at the plate for the second out while raced to third base.
Paige Kurfman was hit by a pitch and stole second to put runners at second and third. Tiffany Lepic then slapped a solid single to left field to score Dant with the winning run.
Huddle finished with two hits and two runs batted in for the Wildcats, who are now 1-9 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. C-SC recorded seven hits overall.
Sophie Stuart earned the victory in relief of Penny Ruiz who left the game for precautionary reasons in the third inning after getting hit by a batted ball. Stuart hurled five strong innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs. She walked one and struck out two.
In the nightcap, William Penn starter Madie Anderson was masterful as she faced just one batter over the minimum in a five-inning 8-0 victory. Anderson had a perfect game going with two out in the fifth inning when Hunt spoiled the party with a double to left center field.
The Statesmen took advantage of some poor pitching by the Wildcats to claim the run-rule victory and the split. Four C-SC pitchers allowed only four hits, but two of those hits were home runs, including a grand slam. C-SC hurlers also issued six walks.
The Wildcats (7-27) are scheduled to host Central Methodist University this Saturday, April 5, at Himsl Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
