Softball Earns First Heart DH Sweep with Wins over Graceland

The Culver-Stockton College softball team scored a season-high 12 runs to snap a nine-game losing streak with a 12-1 victory in the first game of a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Graceland University Saturday afternoon in Lamoni, Iowa.

The Wildcats then posted seven runs in game two and defeated the Yellowjackets 7-2 to earn their first conference doubleheader sweep of the season.

C-SC scored a single run in the first inning on a single by Lauren Weiberg, and a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Lacey Stamper, to lead 2-1 after four innings of the first game.

The Wildcats broke the game open in the fifth inning with their single-highest run output of the season when they plated 10 runs on nine hits to put the game out of reach for the Yellowjackets.

In the big fifth inning, the Wildcats banged out nine hits, including two hits and a RBI single from Hunter Huddle and two hits and a RBI double from Kataleena Hunt. Ryley Pecina added three-run triple while Paige Kurfman had a two-run single. Myah Briese, Weiburg, and Stanper also drove in one run each in the inning.

Kurfman, Hunt Stamper Briese and Huddle all finished with two hits in the game to end the C-SC 13-ht attack. Among those 13 safeties were four extra base hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run.

The beneficiary of the gracious run support was Penny Ruiz who earned her third victory over the season. Ruiz pitched all five innings of the lop-sided contest, scattering five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats broke through in the fourth inning of a scoreless game by hitting two home runs to score three times in the inning.

Kurfman led off the frame with a single but she was forced out when Tiffany Lepic reached on a fielder's choice. Hunt followed with the first of her two home runs to make it 2-0, and then, after Cierra Bush struck out, Pecina hit a solo home run to make it 3-0.

Graceland made it 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth; however, the Wildcats answered with four more runs in the fifth inning to put plenty of distance between them and the Yellowjackets.

C-SC did all their damage in the fifth two outs beginning with a walk to Huddle. Kurfman followed with a single to center to put runners at the corners, and Lepic reached on an infield single to score Huddle with the innings first run.

Then Hunt hit her second home run of the game, a three-run shot, to clear the bases and make the score 7-1.  Hunt finished the game with five runs batted in.

In addition to Hunt's two home runs, Kurfman collected a team-leading three hits to lead the C-SC offensive attack.

Sophie Stuart garnered the victory in the circle with a strong seven innings, scattering seven hits and two runs. Stuart did not walk a batter and struck out four.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Hannibal-LaGrange University this Wednesday, April 23, in a non-conference doubleheader at Himsl Field. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m.
