'Cats Fall to Kansas Wesleyan; Upend Cottey in Branson
The Culver-Stockton College softball team split a pair of games at the Showtime Classic Friday morning in Branson, Mo.
The Wildcats began the day with a 13-5 loss to Kansas Wesleyan University as the Coyotes outhit C-SC 16-10 in the game. Later in the day, C-SC collected eight hits in a 6-2 victory over Cottey (Mo.).
Against Cottey, the Wildcats trailed 2-0 after two innings when they tied the game in the third on a two-run single by Aleki Ulu. Samantha Vetter had led off the inning with a double and Cierra Bush, who had walked with two outs, scored for C-SC.
An error by the Comets led to two more C-SC runs in the fourth inning, and a two-run double by Sophie Meyer scored pinch runner Lauren Waller and Kataleena Hunt in the fiffth inning to round out the scoring.
Uleki and Ryley Pecina finished with two hits each to led the Wildcat attack. Bush and Meyer each recorded a hit and a walk with Bush also pilfering a base.
Cabria Childers earned victory in the circle, pitching a complete-game seven hitter. Both runs were earned and Childers walked one in her outing.
In the opening game, Kansas Wesleyan plated seven runs in the third inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and went on to defeat the Wildcats in six innings.
Eight different Wildcats registered a hit in the game with Vetter collecting three hits, including two doubles. Pecina was the only player to garner multiple RBI's, finishing with two in the game.
C-SC, which split a pair of games Thursday when they lost to Evangel (Mo.) 7-1 before upending Stephens (Mo.) 3-1, is currently 12-8 overall this season. The Wildcats are scheduled to conclude their spring break trip Saturday with two games against teams they already have played this week.
C-SC plays Kansas Wesleyan at 8:30 a.m., before completing the trip with a game against Briar Cliff (Iowa) at 10:30 a.m.
