Softball Splits Twinbill with Visiting Grand View
The Culver-Stockton softball team registered a come-from-behind victory in the second game of a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader to earn a split with Grand View University Saturday afternoon at Himsl Field.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning to propel them to a 5-1 victory in game two. Grand View held off a Wildcat uprising in the first game, winning 5-4.
In the victory, Grand View jumped out in front 1-0 with a run in the top of the third inning. Leila Lopez began the C-SC third inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Payton Todd.
Lopez advanced to third on a wild pitch before Aleki Ulu hit a ground ball to third. Lopez held initially, but broke for home after the throw to first and beat the return throw for the first run for C-SC.
The game stayed that way until the fifth inning when the Wildcats got a one out double from Sophie Meyer. Lopez was hit by a pitch and then Ulu walked with two out to load the bases.
Samantha Vetter then ripped a sharp single to right field to score both Meyer and Lopez to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Cierra Bush began the inning by being hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Lauren Ferguson doubled to left center field to put runners at first and second with one out.
After Meyer struck out, Lopez followed with a two-run double to score Bush and Ferguson for a 5-1 lead.
Cabria Childers allowed a couple of hits in the seventh inning but didn't allow the Vikings a chance to rally
Childers earned her ninth victory in 17 decisions by allowing one run and five hits overall. Childers did not walk a batter and struck out three.
In the first game, Grand View got a pair of two-run homers from Nevaeh Randle to build a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored their first run in the third inning on a RBI triple from Vetter but the Vikings responded with a run in the fourth to get back their original four-run lead back.
C-SC closed to within 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a two run homer by Bush, and then added a run in sixth on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Dillbeck in the sixth.
The Wildcats had a chance in the seventh when Vetter doubled with two out to get in scoring position. However, Ryley Pecina flew out to right to end the game.
The Wildcats (19-17, 6-8 Heart) are scheduled to play at MidAmerica Nazarene University this Friday, April 3, in Olathe, Kan. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
