Softball Registers Back-to-Back Shutouts in Sweep of Peru State
The Culver-Stockton College softball team registered a pair of Heart of America Athletic Conference shutouts over Peru State College at Himsl Field Saturday afternoon.
Cabria Childers allowed one hit and faced just one batter over the minimum as the Wildcats run-ruled the Bobcats 8-0 in the opener. In the nightcap, Lauren Ferguson went 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in as C-SC completed the sweep with a 6-0 decision.
Childers was just as dominant in the second game, allowing three singles while walking one and striking out five. Couple that with her game one victory, Childers scattered four hits, walked one and struck out six in the twinbill to improve to 14-10 overall.
Offensively, the Wildcats scored four runs on five walks, three hit batters and a sacrifice fly in the opening inning of game one. C-SC added three more runs on six hits in the second inning on a RBI single by Cierra Bush and a two-run single by Lula Sassano.
C-SC scored its final run in the fourth inning when Kataleena Hunt singled, moved to third on a double by Sassano and scored on a sacrifice fly by Payton Todd.
The Wildcats garnered eight hits in the opener with Hunt and Sassano collecting two hits each. Sassano finished with three runs batted in.
In game two, the Wildcats began the scoring in the second inning on a RBI groundout from Todd which scored Hunt who had doubled to start the inning.
Ferguson hit a solo home run to lead off the third inning and then, after Aleki Ulu reached on an error, Ryley Pecina hit an inside-the-park home run to score pinch-runner Sam Kozlowski to make it 3-0.
C-SC plated two more runs in the fourth inning when Todd reached on a passed ball after a strikeout, moved to third on a double by Samantha Vetter, and scored on a single by Ferguson. Bush then hit a sacrifice fly to score Vetter with the Wildcats' sixth run.
Ferguson was the only C-SC player to record multiple hits and she matched Pecina with two runs batted in each.
The Wildcats are slated to close out their home schedule on Sunday, April 19, when they host Graceland University at Himsl Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m. with senior recognition scheduled for between games.
