Women's Lacrosse Wins First Postseason Game with Second Half Comeback
The Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team outscored the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) 7-2 in the second half to overcome a 6-4 halftime deficit and pick up its first-ver postseason victory with an 11-8 decision in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
Things didn't start off well for the Wildcats who watched as the Eutectics grabbed a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
It got worse as the second quarter began and UHSP netted the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-2 advantage with 8:34 remaining in the first half.
However, from that point on it was all Wildcats.
C-SC scored the final two goals of the half and then, after UHSP scored first in the third quarter, netted four straight goals to grab its first lead with six minutes left in the period.
After UHSP scored 51 seconds later to tie the game for the final time, Rylan Mahone and Addison Holm recorded unassisted goals before the end of the third quarter to give the Wildcats a 10-8 lead heading to the final 15 minutes.
The fourth quarter saw the two teams combine for nine shots with C-SC getting six shot off in the period. The only goal of the quarter came from Jacee Grinsteinner with 6:10 left in the game.
The Eutectics recorded three shots in the fourth quarter with C-SC goalkeeper Donelle Wagner making two of her seven saves in the period.
Holm, C-SC's leading scorer, was the catalyst for the Wildcat comeback as she scored four goals and added four assists to lead the way.
Grinsteinner and Mahone each chipped in with two goals with Mahone adding an assist. Karson Jackson garnered one goal and one assist.
The Wildcats outshot the Eutectics 33-18 in the game, including 17-9 in the second half. C-SC forced 28 UHSP turnovers with Kolbe Poos and Peyton Bice causing two turnovers each/
C-SC (6-9) advances to the tournament semifinals where they will play top-ranked and top-seeded Benedictine College on Thursday, April 30, in Atchison, Kan. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
