Efficient Wildcats Blank Graceland for First Conference Victory
The Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team defeated Graceland University for its first Heart of America Athletic Conference victory of the season Wednesday night at John Rasmussen Soccer Complex in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Wildcats got a first half goal from Maggie Tuxhorn and two second goals from Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez in the second half to post the 3-0 victory over the Yellowjackets.
Mackenzie Frizzell and the Wildcat defense registered its third shutout of the season. Frizzell stopped four shots on goal.
Tuxhorn put the Wildcat on the board in the 40th minute when she curled a corner kick inside the far post for her first tally of the season. The corner kick was one of eight corners in the first half and 12 in the game for the Wildcats.
Chandler-Gutierrez made it 2-0 in the 60th minute and it started with a free kick near midfield. Savannah Stauffer launched the re-start into the Graceland penalty area. After a scramble, the ball fell to Chandler-Gutierrez who punched it in the net.
In the 67th minute, the Wildcats netted their final goal when a foul was called on the Yellowjackets just outside the penalty area to the left of the Graceland goal on the end line. Rian Moore lifted the free kick to the middle of the goal mouth where Chandler-Gutierrez headed into the left corner of the net for her second of the game and 11th of the season.
C-SC was efficient offensively, scoring its three goals on just six shots on goal and nine shots overall. The Wildcats held a 9-7 advantage on shots.
The Wildcats, now 6-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Heart, are scheduled to play their second straight road contest this Saturday, Sept. 21, at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
