Smith, Straus Set Meet Records at Luther Invitational
The Culver-Stockton women's track and field team won four events and placed second in in two others in finishing second in the Luther Invitational Saturday afternoon in Decorah, Iowa.
The Wildcats totaled 167 points overall to finish second behind Hamline University, which had 192 total points.
Emma Smith and Delaney Straus each set meet records in their respective events. Smith set a school record in the 60-meter dash and finished first overall in a time of 7.90 seconds. Straus set her meet record in the 600-meter run in a time of 1:38.41.
Straus also claimed the 1000-meter run while Victoria Pollard captured the 300-meter run for the Wildcats. Straus won the 1000 in time of 3:05.09 and Pollard claimed the 300 in a time of 44.43 seconds.
Faith Younce and Emma Berry both ran well the 2000-meter steeple chase and the 3000-meter run. Younce finished 2nd in the steeple chase in a time of 7:57.07, while Berry placed fourth in time of 8:04.64. In the 3000, Younce finished third in a time of 12:01.07 while Berry was fourth in a time of 12:24.00.
In the field events, Donyall Sharp broke her own school record in the weight throw with a mark of 48 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Shares also placed third in the shot put with a mark of 35 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Zoi Smith set a school record in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet, 7 1/4 inches, finishing third overall, while Straus placed third in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 7 3/4 inches.
The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships next weekend, Feb. 14-15, at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.
