Delaney Straus Selected as WinWon Heart Outdoor Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Culver-Stockton College sophomore Delaney Straus has been named the WinWon Heart of America Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performance in the heptathlon during the Central Methodist University Invitational in Fayette, Mo., March 29-30.

Straus, of Philadelphia, Mo. (Marion County HS), smashed the school record with a point total of 4158, winning the event by 656 points. The mark is currently fourth in the NAIA this season. The previous record of 3520 was set by Ashlyn May in 2016.

Straus won five of the seven events that make up the heptathlon, setting personal best marks in six of the events, and setting a school record in the 800-meter run, which is the final event of the competition. Straus surpassed her own school record in the 800 by four seconds, finishing in a time of 2:17.88, which is the second best time in the Heart this season.

In addition, Straus set personal bests and captured the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.13 seconds; won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 1 inch; captured the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.67 seconds; and won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 2 ¼ inches. She also set a personal best mark in the shot put, finishing third in the event with a throw of 28 feet, 11 ¼ inches.

The only event Straus did not set a personal record or win was in the javelin where she placed second, throwing the spear 84 feet, 5 inches.

Straus is the third Wildcat and first female track and field athlete to earn accolades from the conference this season. Jabez Rivers and Logan Lucas were named men's track athletes of the week the previous two week, respectively.

The Wildcats are back in action this week when they participate in the Cornell University Invitational this Saturday, April 7, in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The first events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
