Women's Track and Field Post Best Heart Finish behind Straus' Effort

Delaney Straus placed in three events, including the heptathlon, to lead the Culver-Stockton College women's track and field team at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships presented by WinWon Technologies at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., Friday and Saturday.

The Wildcats concluded the weekend with their best finish at the Heart Outdoor Championships. The Wildcat women finished eighth in the team competition, which is the best finish since the league expanded to 13 teams in 2016. The 39.75 team points by C-SC are the most by the women's team since the program was reinstated in 2008. MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) won the women's portion with 169.5 points.

Straus became the first Wildcat to win two event titles in the same conference meet since Paige Bray captured the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 2017.

Straus opened her weekend by taking the top spot in the heptathlon with a school record 4,654 points, breaking her previous record of 4,383, which she set last week at the Drake Relays, by 271 points.

Straus finished first in two of the seven events, winning the 200-meter dash and the 800-meter run, and placed second in the long jump and third in the javelin and high jump.

Straus wasn't done after finishing the heptathlon.

The sophomore from Marion County High School in Philadelphia, Mo., ran the 1500-meter run and place fourth with a time of 4:55.67. Finally, Straus competed in the 800, an event she has already qualified for nationals in, and capped her weekend with a first place finish in a time of 2:18.29. In all, Straus contributed 25 of the Wildcats' 39.75 points.

Two other athletes who have qualified for the NAIA national meet, Allison Morris and Faith Younce, finished second and third, respectively in the 500-meter race walk. Morris concluded in a time of 29:09.01 while Younce completed the event in 29:20.02.

On Friday, Zoi Smith got the Wildcats their first points with a seventh place tie in the pole vault. Smith hit a mark of 8 feet, 8 1/4 inches to score 0.75 points.
