Straus, Younce Lead Women's Track to Seventh Place Finish at Heart Championships
The Culver-Stockton College women's track and field team claimed two event titles and registered 57 total points overall to place seventh in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, in Fayette, Mo. Central Methodist and Benedictine tied for the team title with 179 points each.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior Delaney Straus who claimed one event title, finished fourth in another and fifth in a third individual event. Straus was also a member of two relay teams that earned all-conference honors.
Straus started her weekend by repeating as champion in the heptathlon, winning the multi-event competition for the second year in a row. Straus garnered 4510 points, winning the event by 223 points.
Straus also earned points in the 400-meter hurdles on the track and in the triple jump in the field to left the Wildcats. In the 400 hurdles, Straus placed 4th overall with a time of 1:04.79, and fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 10 3/4 inches.
Also claiming an event title for the Wildcats was senior Faith Younce, who won the 5000-meter race walk with a time of 29:42.96. Younce was just one of three Wildcats in the race walk to finish in the top five.
Klaudia Blaszczyk finished third in the race walk with a time of 36:47.66, while Emma Berry placed fifth overall with a time of 45:21.84.
Younce and Berry teamed up to finish sixth and eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with Younce finishing in a time of 12:48.44, and Berry completing the event in a time of 13:31.17.
Freshman Abagail Mooney earned points in two events, placing fifth in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11 1/2 inches, and sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet, 0 1/4 inches.
Kinlie Judd finished ahead of Mooney in the pole vault, placing fifth overall with a vault of 9 feet, 6 1/4 inches, while Zoi Smith placed eighth in the event with a mark of 8 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
The Wildcats also earned points in a pair of relays over the weekend, placing eighth in the 4x400 with a time of 4:14.97, and eighth in the 4x800 with a time of 10;12.89.
The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in one or two Last Chance meets next weekend, May 9-10, at sites to be determined.
