Women's Volleyball Sweeps the Week with Four-Set Victory over Baker
With a four-set victory over Baker University Saturday afternoon, the Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team finished the week 3-0 and moved atop the Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division standings.
The Wildcats improved to 12-5 overall and 7-4 in the Heart with a 25-22, 26-28, 25-13, 25-23 victory over Baker at Charles Field House. C-SC is percentage points ahead of Mount Mercy (Iowa), which sits at 8-5 in the Heart's North Division.
The seven conference victories this season gives the Wildcats the most league wins in a year since 2015 when they also garnered seven victories. The Wildcats can earn their eighth victory Tuesday night, Oct. 11, against Peru State (Neb.) at Charles Field House. The Bobcats defeated C-SC in five sets earlier this season. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
Against Baker, Madison McClain became the latest member of the 1,000 career kills club when she finished with 21 terminations to lead the Wildcats Saturday. McClain also registered 22 digs to net her 12th double-double of the season.
Heleine Filipe added 16 kills for the Wildcats in the victory. Ali Scott tallied eight kills, while Abby Godwin totaled five terminations. Lauren Bloom set the course with 46 set assists in the match.
The Wildcats totaled 10 service aces with Veiauna Herman leading he way with three. Bloom, Elaysia Rasmussen and Kelsie Schieppe totaled two service aces each.
Defensively, Herman joined McClain in the back row with 22 digs as the Wildcats had 78 digs overall. C-SC also recorded 7.5 team blocks with 15 block assists in the match. Ashleigh Brawley garnered five block assists to lead the way while McClain had four and Filipe three.
The Wildcats finished the match with a .197 attack percentage as a team, recording 54 kills and committing 23 errors on 157 swings. Baker garnered a .137 attack percentage with 45 kills, 24 errors and 153 attempts.
McClain, with a .275 attack percentage, Filipe, with a .256 attack percentage, and Scott, with a .267 attack percentage, formed a strong trio at the net during the match. C-SC's best set was the final set when they attacked at a .381 clip in the fourth set, garnering 19 kills and committing just three errors on 42 attempts
