Men's Basketball Nipped by CMU in Overtime
Central Methodist University outscored the Culver-Stockton men's basketball team 16-8 in overtime to post an 89-81 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory at Puckett Fieldhouse in Fayette, Mo., Wednesday night.
The Wildcats trailed 57-43 with 12;21 remaining in the game but outscored the Eagles 30-16 over the final 12 minutes of the game. Quinten Blackburn tied the game after grabbing a couple of offensive rebounds with eight seconds left in regulation.
The Eagles had an opportunity to win the game in regular time but a strong defensive effort from Kamren Wires and the Wildcats kept CMU from getting a shot off before the buzzer.
CMU garnered the first five points of overtime to grab the lead and never looked back. The Wildcats missed the front end of a bonus free throw and a 3-pointer in the first minute of the overtime period.
Damont Hanton matched his season high with 20 points to lead the Wildcats in scoring. Damar Jenkins added 19 points while Blackburn and Wires had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Blackburn, who made his first start since his freshman season, grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to complete his first career double-double. Jenkins finished with four assists and three steals.
The Wildcats begin a three-game homestead to conclude the season this Saturday, Feb. 14, against Missouri Valley College. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Charles Field House.
