Men's Volleyball Goes 0-2 on Day One of Heart Challenge
The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball team won just one set in losing two matches on the first day of the Heart of America Challenge at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis.
The Wildcats began their day with a 25-12, 25-17, 17-25, 25-18 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) University. C-SC registered a hitting percentage below .100 in three of the four sets, recording a .310 attack percentage in the set three victory.
Campbellsville had a 56-33 kill advantage despite having an equal number of attempts and errors. The Wildcats had five team blocks while the Tigers garnered just two team blocks. The Tigers had nine service aces while C-SC totaled seven service aces.
Cooper Varner was the only Wildcat to reach double figures in kills with 12 terminations. Zach Kowalewicz, Rio Victor and Henry Reeves all collected five kills each. Matt Reese had 26 set assists.
In its second match, C-SC dropped a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 decision to Brescia (Ky.) University. The Wildcats committed 24 hitting errors as the Bearcats committed just 10 attack errors in the match. Brescia turned in a strong effort at the net with nine team blocks to the Wildcats three team blocks.
Varner was again the top offensive threat for the Wildcats, totaling a team high nine kills in the match. Kowalewicz, Jack Laney and Malachi Gnade all registered four kills each. Reese garnered 25 set assists.
C-SC (0-4) was scheduled to play two more matches Saturday; however, one of the teams, LeMoyne-Owen, backed out at the last second. Instead, the Wildcats will play Saint Ambrose (Iowa) at 1 p.m. in their only match of the day.
