Softball Wins Twice to Even Record at 2-2
One day after starting the season with a pair of losses, the Culver-Stockton softball team rebounded with two shutout victories on the second day of the American State Bank Softball Classic hosted by Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Wildcats began the day with a five-inning, 8-0 victory over York (Neb.) in the morning. C-SC followed up that victory with a 2-0 decision over Midland University (Neb.), who is ranked 22nd in the NAIA Preseason national poll.
In the early victory over York, the Wildcats banged out 10 hits with Kataleena Hunt, Sophie Meyer and Leila Lopez collecting two hits each. Cabria Childers did not record a hit in the contest; however, did post two runs batted in on a pair of sacrifice flies.
Childers also earned the victory and shutout in the circle, hurling five innings and scattering three hits while striking out two.
During the afternoon session, Sophie Stuart pitched a complete game five hitter as the Wildcats pulled the upset over Midland. Stuart walked one and struck out six in earning her first victory of the season.
Stuart got all the runs she would need in the fifth inning when Aleki Ulu reached on an error and Cierra Bush was hit by a pitch. Lauren Ferguson sacrificed both runners up a base before Lauren Waller hit a two-out double to score both runs.
The Wildcats are scheduled to conclude the opening weekend of play on Sunday, Feb. 8, against Mount Marty (S.D.) at 1 p.m. and Morningside (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
