The Culver-Stockton softball team returned from a week off and promptly won three of the four games played at the Showtime Classic in Branson, Mo., over the weekend.
The Wildcats opened play Saturday with a tough 3-0 loss to Science and Arts (Okla.) in eight innings. However, C-SC rebounded later that afternoon for a 9-1 decision over Mission (Mo.), and then swept the two games on Sunday, defeating Morningside (Iowa) 8-7 in 10 innings, and Avila (Mo.) 3-2 in eight innings.
C-SC has won seven of its last eight games and is currently 9-5 overall this season. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3, in Branson. Game times are slated for 12 and 2 p.m.
Against Science and Arts, Wildcat starter Sophie Stuart held the Drovers to two hits over the first seven innings before the Drovers finally got to her in the eighth inning for three runs on three hits. C-SC was limited to three hits in the game offensively while being shut out for the third time this season.
The Wildcats rebounded in a big way in their next game, banging out 13 hits and scoring nine runs in a 9-1 ruin-rule victory over Mission.
Four players, Leila Lopez, Ryley Pecina, Samantha Vetter, and Kataleena Hunt, all collected two hits for the Wildcats with Vetter driving in two runs. Aleki Ulu recorded one hit and had three runs batted in.
Cabria Childers earned the victory in the circle holding the Patriots to five hits and one run. Childers walked one and struck out two.
On Sunday morning, Hunt's two-run single in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the game-winner for the Wildcats over Morningside. Hunt finished the game with two hits and three runs batted in, while Lulu Sassano also had two hits and a RBI.
Childers went the distance for the Wildcats, pitching all 10 innings and scattering six hits while allowing seven run (4 earned). Childers pitched around five walks and two Wildcat errors while adding four strikeouts.
In the final game of the weekend, C-SC fell behind Avila 2-0 before plating two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Cierra Bush gave the Wildcats their first run with a run-scoring single to score Vetter, and then Hunt drove Bush home with a RBI double to tie the game.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when the Wildcats loaded the bases before Bush topped off a 4-for-4 game with a RBI single for the walk-off victory.
Stuart earned the complete-game victory after allowing six hits and two runs (1 earned) over eight strong innings. Stuart walked two and struck out two in the game.
