Softball Goes 7-5 on Spring Break Trip

After going 3-1 last weekend to start the Showtime Classic in Branson, Mo., the Culver-Stockton softball team split its next eight games during the week, splitting its final pair of games Saturday morning.

The Wildcats opened play early Saturday morning with a 6-2 loss to Kansas Wesleyan University, the second time they lost to the Coyotes this week. However, C-SC rebounded in the afternoon with a 5-4 decision over Briar Cliff University, which they split with earlier in the week.

Against Briar Cliff, the Wildcats triailed 2-0 in the third inning when C-SC's Samantha Vetter drilled a three-run homer to give the Wildcats the lead.

After the Chargers tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, C-SC regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Lauren Ferguson delivered a two-run, bases-loaded double.

Briar Cliff closed to within a run at 5-4 with a run in the fifth inning, but Cabria Childers relieved starter Sophie Stuart and didn't allow a run in 2 2/3 innings to shut the door on the Chargers' chances.

Ferguson ended the day with two hits while Kataleena Hunt recorded her 44th career double. Stuart hurled the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and pitching around six walks. She also registered two strikeouts to earn the victory.

Earlier in the day, Kansas Wesleyan plated three runs in the first inning and single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to pick up the victory.

The Wildcats were limited to seven hits with Leila Lopez going 3-for-3 with a runs scored, and Sophie Meyer collecting two hits in three at-bats with a run batted in. Ryley Pecina drove in the other run for C-SC.

Childers went the distance for the Wildcats, catering eight hits and allowing six runs (five earned). She walked two and struck out three.

C-SC (13-9) is slated to begin Heart of America Athletic Conference play next Saturday, March 14, against Park University. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. at Himsl Field in Canton.
